ZOE has a reputation for rescuing children in danger. Through the unseen network of good people throughout Thailand, we were informed about a girl who was orphaned five years earlier. She was left with a man who used her as a slave in every way. She had no means to protect herself. She told us she cried and cried, worked very hard all the time, did not get fed much, and did not sleep.
Her Rescue: After 4 hours in our 4WD truck, our path became blocked by a large tree that fell across the road. We had to use a motorcycle to continue our rescue. Unfortunately, the road disappeared and the hill we were climbing became too steep even for a motorcycle. We had to trek the rest of the way using a machete to clear a path. Our investigation validated the horrific story we had been told. We also learned of additional heartbreaking abuse.
Now, she is safe at ZOE. She has told us that she peacefully sleeps through the night for the first time in years. She does not cry anymore, and has no fear. She is very bright and is catching up fast in school. She is so funny and often has everyone around her laughing. She has also made friends quickly with the other ZOE kids.
She told us that she was so shocked at every meal, that the food is so plentiful and delicious. She said, “It is hard for me to stop at one serving. I am eating so much!” Since arriving at ZCH, she thinks she has gained so much weight. Her reaction to the food at ZOE is common to newly rescued children. However, soon they learn there will be enough food at each meal, and they can rest assured that tomorrow, more food will be served.
